Guide aims to help improve hospital environment for GLBT patients

A new field guide from the Joint Commission urges U.S. hospitals to create a more welcoming, safe and inclusive environment that contributes to improved health care quality for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) patients and their families.

The field guide, Advancing Effective Communication, Cultural Competence, and Patient- and Family-Centered Care for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Community, features a compilation of strategies, practice examples, resources and testimonials designed to help hospitals in their efforts to improve communication and provide more patient-centered care to their GLBT patients. The Joint Commission developed the guide with support from the California Endowment.

Ob-gyns: Be ready to treat transgender patients

Obstetricians and gynecologists should prepare to provide routine treatment and screening for transgender patients or refer them to other physicians, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists said last week.

In a Committee Opinion published Nov. 21, the organization said preparing to treat transgender patients would help address the significant health care disparities they experience and would improve their access to care. The group also stated its opposition to gender identity discrimination and voiced support of both public and private health insurance coverage for gender identity disorder treatment. The AMA has policy supporting public and private health insurance coverage for treatment of gender identity disorder as recommended by the patient's physician.
