AMA app helps patients track progress toward healthier lifestyle goals

Patients who made resolutions to become healthier this year now have an easy way to monitor their progress to achieve weight, eating and physical activity goals.

On Monday the AMA released a free smartphone app as part of the AMA Healthier Life Steps™ initiative, which helps patients make healthy choices and live healthy lives. The Weigh What Matters app lets patients make daily entries to track their weight, eating habits and physical activity as they work toward goals they have established with their physicians.

"The AMA Healthier Life Steps™ program offers tools and information to help physicians and patients work together to promote longer, healthier lives," AMA President Peter W. Carmel, MD, said in a news release. "Physicians and their staff can use this new app as a resource to work with patients to address challenging behavioral changes."

With the Weigh What Matters app, patients can view progress reports and email them to their physicians. The app also calculates the patient's body mass index and identifies whether or not the patient is at a healthy weight.

This is the first AMA app available for both Android devices and the Apple iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. A second patient app called My Medications also is available through the iTunes store.
