News for Senior and Retired Physicians

Early retirees choose locum tenens work

For physicians who are not ready to retire but want to scale down their work hours, locum tenens work provides an excellent alternative to full-time practice. Physicians can enjoy more reasonable hours while combining work and travel time in a new location. The AMA Senior Physicians Group website provides voluntary opportunities and information about the National Association of Locum Tenens Organizations.

Get primed for a political endeavor; sign up for Campaign School

Taping a radio commercial or writing a political fundraising letter may not be a core competency in your practice. But they are on the agenda for the AMA Political Action Committee (AMPAC) Campaign School, April 13–17, in Pentagon City, Va. It's held annually each year for AMA members who wish to become more involved in the political process as advocates or volunteers for medicine-friendly candidates.

The school is organized around a simulated congressional campaign, where participants are put on campaign "staff" teams and attend daily lectures and nightly exercises on campaign strategy, media advertising and political fundraising. Graduates of the school have continued on in their careers to become advisers and strategists for political campaigns across the country. Attendees include physicians, spouses of physicians, residents and medical students interested in becoming more involved in politics.

For more information on this program or an application, visit the AMPAC website or e-mail Jim Wilson, the AMA's political education programs manager. It's important to note that AMPAC covers the cost of the school for AMA members, except transportation to the Washington, D.C.-metro area.
