Accountable Care Organizations
Fulfilling a long-time advocacy goal of the AMA, passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PL 111-148) will expand coverage to an additional 32 million Americans by 2019. Key provisions within the Act that expand coverage and increase access to care include the elimination of coverage exclusions for pre-existing conditions; providing refundable and advanceable "premium" credits for the purchase of private insurance for those with incomes up to 400% of the federal poverty level (FPL): expanding coverage to dependent children to age 26; and expanding Medicaid to all with incomes up to 133% of FPL.
