Maintenance of Certification and Licensure: Improving the Quality of Health Care or a Burden to Physicians?
Joint Session with the Organized Medical Staff Section (OMSS)
Saturday, November 16, 2013
8:00 - 9:00 a.m.
Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center - Potomac D
1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™
Moderator: Steven Stack, MD, Immediate Past Chair, AMA Board of Trustees
- Hank Chaudhry, DO, MS, President and CEO, FSMB
- Lois Nora, MD, JD, MBA, President and CEO, ABMS
In 2000, the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) adopted Maintenance of Certification (MOC) as a framework for all boards to support the lifelong learning, self-assessment and practice improvement of their diplomates. Currently the Maintenance of Certification Committee of the ABMS is considering the next iteration of the MOC Standards, expected to be introduced in 2015.
Over the past several years the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and individual state boards have also been working to establish a framework and process for Maintenance of Licensure (MOL). Like MOC, MOL is intended to promote continuous professional development relevant to a physician’s area of practice and to improve quality care and patient safety.
This program will provide information on the current and evolving MOC requirements and associated issues as well as the status of MOL planning and pilot activities. This program will include a panel of informed faculty who will discuss issues surrounding the current MOC requirements and the direction of MOL.
- Identify the opportunities and challenges associated with MOC and MOL.
- Determine the impact both MOC and MOL have or may have on practicing physicians.
- Understand potential opportunities for improving the MOC and MOL processes.
