Leadership Opportunities
- Make a difference.
- Strengthen the medical profession.
- Protect your patients’ rights.
- Create a brighter future for you and your colleagues.
The American Medical Association is your organization, and by getting involved you can help shape its future, as well as the future of the medical profession in general.
The AMA Young Physicians Section (AMA-YPS) was formed in 1986. Among its goals are to facilitate the development of young physician leaders within the Association. It does this through a variety of means, including:
- offering leadership development seminars at its Annual and Interim Meetings;
- facilitating the "mainstreaming" of young physicians by encouraging qualified candidates to run for AMA councils and committees, as well as leadership positions in state, county and specialty societies; and
- nominating and/or endorsing qualified candidates aspiring to leadership positions.
The information that follows briefly describes many leadership positions available within the AMA to physician members of all ages. Also included is information about positions specifically for young physicians within the Young Physicians Section. The considerations one needs to make and the steps one needs to take, when aspiring to office, also have been identified.
What is not covered is information on how to represent your state medical society or national medical specialty society as a delegate or alternate delegate to the AMA House of Delegates, since qualifications and election processes are determined by the individual state or specialty society.
The AMA Young Physicians Section hopes this information will be helpful to you whether you aspire to an AMA office or just seek details about opportunities for increased involvement. The AMA-YPS Governing Council members are willing to work directly with any young physician interested in seeking a leadership position. Also, the council can provide advice on strategies specific to the position being sought. Let us hear from you.
