About the AMA-WPC Governing Council
The AMA-WPC is an AMA special interest group focused on increasing the involvement of women physicians and medical students, and strengthening their collective advocacy voice on women in medicine professional issues and women’s health. All women members of the AMA are automatically enrolled.
The activities of the AMA-WPC are guided by an eight-member Governing Council which includes four At-Large members who are elected by the WPC membership from nominations through an open nomination process. The remaining four positions are designated for a representative each from the American Medical Women’s Association and the AMA Medical Student Section, Resident and Fellow Section, and Young Physician Section. These members are elected by the WPC membership from nominations provided by those respective groups.
All AMA-WPC members are eligible to vote. AMA-WPC membership is comprised of all female AMA members and male AMA members who have ‘’opted in” to the AMA-WPC.
WPC Goals and Objectives:
- Provide a dedicated forum for networking, mentoring, advocacy, and leadership development.
- Advance advocacy and raise awareness about sex/gender–based medicine.
- Identify/address professional issues affecting women in the profession.
- Increase female membership, participation, and leadership in the AMA.
- Provide advice and counsel to the AMA Board of Trustees and Councils on issues of special interest to women in the medical profession.
Criteria/Responsibilities for Serving on the WPC Governing Council:
- Must be a current member of the AMA and the AMA-WPC, and
- Demonstrate interest and/or experience in the AMA-WPC goals and objectives.
- Must attend the Governing Council meetings (3-4), which serve as the platform for setting WPC direction and activities, held in conjunction with the: 1) June AMA Annual Meeting (Chicago), 2) November AMA Interim Meeting (various locations) and 3) National Advocacy Conference (Wash. DC) in March. A fourth meeting may occasionally be held. Attendance is also required on regular conference calls (about eight per year).
- Must be willing and able to carry out responsibilities as agreed to by the Council, including, but not limited to, presenting periodic reports on AMA-WPC activities to/from their sponsoring organizations if applicable, and participating in AMA-WPC projects on policy developments/advocacy activities.
Note: Governing Council members are reimbursed by the AMA for related travel/other expenses.
