SPS Membership

Dear Senior Physician:

With the AMA Senior Physicians Group being granted section status by the AMA House of Delegates, senior physicians are encouraged to look at the new AMA Senior Physicians Section (SPS) as a source of information and as a way to address issues affecting them.

The AMA House of Delegates voted in November at its Interim Meeting to transition the AMA Senior Physicians Group to the AMA-SPS, giving it an assembly with a governing council and one delegate and one alternate delegate seated in the House. The move comes at an important time for medicine one that has seen the focus and interests of senior physicians change within what is a growing demographic segment of the profession. The increasing shortage of physicians, the prospect of a large new influx of patients under the Affordable Care Act, and the income pressures on retired or reduced-hours physicians are creating new challenges, including licensure and competency issues, along with the affordability of medical liability insurance, insurance regulations at the state level and issues surrounding re-entry.

The AMA Senior Physicians Section will be well-positioned to consider these issues and to bring about the specific and clear voice of physicians over the age of 65, regardless of employment status, into the AMA House of Delegates and into the policymaking and programming of the organization. I urge you to continue supporting the AMA and its advocacy work by renewing your AMA membership. Your lifetime of experience and continuous contribution to the medical profession is extremely important and we want you to remain an active member. If you have further questions, please contact Alice Reed, Senior Physician Section, at (312) 464-5523.

Sincerely,
Claire V. Wolfe, MD
Chair, Senior Physicians Section
