Jack B. McConnell, MD Award for Excellence in Volunteerism

2012 Winner Announced

The Jack B. McConnell, MD, Award for Excellence in Volunteerism recognizes the work of senior physicians who provides treatment to U.S. patients who lack access to health care. After a full career of practice, these physicians remain dedicated to the future of medicine through the spirit of volunteerism.  A $2,500 grant will be given to the institution or organization with which each recipient works. The recipient will also receive travel expenses and accommodations to the Excellence in Medicine Awards banquet on Feb. 13, 2012, and the AMA National Advocacy Conference on Feb. 13-15, 2012, in Washington D.C.

Everett RhoadesEverett R. Rhoades, MD, FACP, is Professor Emeritus of Medicine at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, and Senior Consultant to the University’s Center for American Indian Health Research. A member of the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma, Dr. Rhoades has been engaged in numerous local and national initiatives pertaining to Native Americans, including being appointed as the first American Indian Director of the Indian Health Service in 1982. Dr. Rhoades founded the Association of American Indian Physicians and the Oklahoma City Indian Clinic, one of the largest urban Native American health centers in the nation. After a long and impressive career in medicine and public administration, Dr. Rhoades continues to spend countless hours volunteering to support the Oklahoma City Indian Clinic’s long-range planning efforts and to ensure that urban American Indians receive high-quality health care while away from their traditional tribal homes.
