Program Description:
The physician workforce is aging and this trend will only continue upwards as baby boomers turn 65. Senior physicians today will confront a changing regulatory environment that will need to meet physicians' needs and balance the concerns of public safety and opportunities for those continuing in practice. How can we improve understanding of impairment in older physicians related to conditions more prevalent with advanced aging and facilitate the planning of prevention strategies?
This program will cover the physiology of aging and its implications for physicians, and review what State Medical Boards are currently advising. There are no easy answers for assessment and treatment, but the AMA should have a role in determining competency measurements in an aging workforce. This session will examine positive ways in which current physician leaders might welcome new guidelines for addressing the special circumstances and needs of senior physicians.
Objectives of the Program:
1. Discuss the physiology of aging with emphasis on normal and abnormal sensory and cognitive changes.
2. Discuss the issue of cognitive impairment in aging physicians with emphasis on assessment of competency.
3. Develop strategies that can be designed to retain doctors in the workforce and practice in a safe manner.
4. Discussion of an agenda for future study of the issue with the eventual goal to disseminate guidelines for assessing competency in senior physicians.
Hosted by the American Medical Association Senior Physicians Section; Council on Medical Education (CME); Council on Science and Public Health (CSAPH); International Medical Graduates Section (IMG); Organized Medical Staff Section (OMSS); Section on Medical Schools (SMS); Women Physicians Congress (WPC) and the Young Physicians Section (YPS).
