AMA Council on Legislation

Council on Legislation Application Deadline: Feb. 15, 2010

The Council is composed of 10 physicians, one resident  physician, one medical student, and one member each from AMPAC and the AMA Alliance. The Council addresses federal legislation and AMA policies that deal with legislative issues and meets six times per year. This is a one-year position chosen by the Board of Trustees.  Please complete the application by Feb. 15, 2010.

International Medical Graduates (IMG) Governing Council Resident Representative

IMG GC Representative Application Deadline: March 1, 2010

The Resident and Fellow Section (RFS) is seeking applicants to fill a vacant resident representative position on the IMG Section Governing Council. The term will end in June 2008. You will be eligible to run for another term if desired. The IMG Section represents and advocates for IMGs within the AMA. Residents and fellows who are IMGs may apply for this position by completing an application by March 1, 2010. Endorsements and/or letters of support from medical associations are optional.

IMG Responsibilities and Guidelines:

  • Must be a current member of the AMA.
  • Must have interest in helping the AMA to achieve the IMG goals and objectives, and demonstrate experience in related activities.
  • Must attend the 4 IMG Governing Council meetings which serve as the platform for setting IMG direction and activities. These meetings are held each year at the (1) June AMA Annual Meeting (Chicago), (2) November AMA Interim Meeting (various locations) and (3) February held in conjunction with the AMA National Advocacy Conference in Wash. DC. A fourth (4) meeting is held in August. Attendance is also required on occasional conference calls.(Note: Governing Council members are reimbursed by the AMA for all travel expenses related to attending these meetings.)
  • Must be able to carry out responsibilities as agreed to by the Council, including, but not limited to, presenting periodic reports on IMG activities and participating in other IMG programs and activities, as needed.

Minority Affairs Consortium

MAC Application Deadline: March 1, 2010
The MAC promotes education and advocacy on minority health issues and works to increase diversity in AMA membership and leadership.   All resident and fellow members are eligible to apply for this slotted seat on the MAC Governing Council for a resident or fellow physician. The appointed representative will serve a two-year term. Please complete the application by March 1, 2010.  

Resident Director to the ACGME Board of Directors

ACGME Resident Director Application Deadline: May 1, 2010
The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is composed of the AMA, American Hospital Association, Association of American Medical Colleges, Council of Medical Specialty Societies, American Board of Medical Specialties, a resident physician and a representative from the government and two members from the public. This organization accredits more than 6,000 residency programs throughout the United States. The Council meets three times per year and establishes general performance parameters for programs, as well as approving specific accreditation recommendations of the residency review committees. This is a two-year position.  Please complete the application by May 1, 2010.  

Resident/fellow representative to AMPAC  

AMPAC Representative Application Deadline: June 1, 2010
The Resident and Fellow Section representative will serve a two-year term on this 12 member committee. Applicants are reviewed by the AMA-RFS Governing Council and send nominations to the AMA Board of Trustees who appoint the position. The AMA created AMPAC in 1961 to strengthen the cause of organized medicine by making campaign contributions to medicine friendly candidates running for the US House or Senate. AMPAC has expanded its focus to include maximizing political education and political participation of physicians and medical students, through the AMPAC Candidate’s Workshop and AMPAC Campaign School, for example. Please complete the application by June 1, 2010.

AMA Council on Medical Service

CMS application Deadline: Jan. 29, 2010

This 12 member council actively undertakes studies on how health care services should be delivered and financed and presents policy recommendations to the House of Delegates. This position will be elected by the House of Delegates at the 2010 Annual Meeting. RFS Candidates may seek endorsement from the RFS Assembly at the RFS 2009 Interim Meeting. The term is three years with a two term maximum.
