Physician Employment Agreements

The American Medical Association (AMA) recognizes that many physicians are becoming employees of hospitals, medical groups or affiliate organizations. For the physician making a career move—and looking to do so with greater knowledge and confidence—the AMA offers several free membership resources that can enhance your understanding and negotiating position as you navigate employment contracts and opportunities in various practice settings.

Annotated Model Physician-Hospital Employment Agreement

This valuable resource addresses the specific needs of physicians who are preparing to negotiate an employment contract with a hospital or related entity. AMA members may view the interactive Physician-Hospital Agreement online for free. Non-members may purchase access to the current edition through the AMA Bookstore. View the table of contents.

Annotated Model Physician-Group Practice Employment Agreement

With the ongoing economic reorganization of health care, more newly graduated and established physicians are becoming employees in established medical groups, or group practices that they form with other physicians. This manual is written to assist both physician-employees who are entering into employment contracts and physician groups that employ physicians. Also, to view streaming video on contracting, go to the "Succeeding from medical school to practice" resource page and click on the video library link.

While the AMA's annotated employment agreements are not substitutes for legal advice from qualified, health care counsel experienced in representing physician clients, they do provide a thorough description of basic contract terms typically found in such employment agreements, as well as in-depth explanations of the significance of such provisions and language that benefits the physician employee. In addition, these resources offer important examples of language that may be problematic to the physician employee.
