AMA-MSS Standing Committees
Each year, the AMA-MSS Governing Council appoints AMA medical student members to serve one-year terms on its Standing Committees. These Committees support the GC in a number of ways, with responsibilities varying between Committees.
Below are descriptions of each AMA-MSS Standing Committee.
Communication and Integration Committee (CIC)
The AMA-MSS Communication and Integration Committee (CIC) is responsible for integrating and directing two-way communications between and among the chapter, state, region, and national levels of the AMA-MSS. CIC works with leaders at all levels of the AMA-MSS and with AMA-MSS staff to develop and refine chapter resources that will empower grassroots chapter activities.
Committee on Economics in Medicine (CEM)
The AMA-MSS Committee on Economics in Medicine (CEM) is responsible for studying economic aspects of the practice medicine as they apply to medical students and educating medical student members of the AMA about issues on the business side of medicine.

Committee on Legislation and Advocacy (COLA)
The AMA-MSS Committee on Legislation and Advocacy (COLA) is responsible for facilitating advocacy on key health policy issues, both domestic and global, by creating and distributing information and other resources to fuel grassroots campaigns at the chapter level.
Committee on Long Range Planning (COLRP)
The AMA-MSS Committee on Long Range Planning (COLRP) is responsible for studying various AMA-MSS issues such as structure, function, and strategic planning as they relate to the future of the Section.
Committee on Medical Education (CME)
The AMA-MSS Committee on Medical Education (CME) is responsible for studying and creating informational resources on various medical education issues. CME works closely with the AMA medical students appointed to the AMA Council on Medical Education and other groups involved in medical education (e.g. LCME, NBME, NRMP) in order to remain informed on the AMA’s stance on various educational issues.
Committee on Bioethics and Humanities (CBH)
The AMA-MSS Committee on Bioethics and Humanities (CBH) is responsible for facilitating student discussion on interesting and relevant topics in medical ethics and heightening student awareness of opportunities available to medical students through the AMA Ethics Standards Group.
Committee on Membership Recruitment and Retention (MRR)
The AMA-MSS Committee on Membership Recruitment and Retention (MRR) is responsible for coordinating recruitment efforts between and among national, region, state and chapter levels of the AMA-MSS. MRR strives to find ways to further the value of AMA membership to medical students, with a particular focus on individual chapter development. MRR provides ideas for recruitment programming and strategies, assists in development and implementation strategies for increased recruitment and retention into residency, and works with the AMA-MSS Outreach Program to develop recruitment projects and presentations.
Committee on Global and Public Health (GPH)
The AMA-MSS Committee on Global and Public Health (GPH) is responsible for reviewing current domestic and global public health issues and educating medical student members of the AMA on these issues. GPH also seeks to involve medical students in public health initiatives by facilitating chapter-level implementation of public health projects.
Committee on Scientific Issues (CSI)
The AMA-MSS Committee on Scientific Issues (CSI) is responsible for educating medical student members of the AMA on scientific issues. CSI also serves as an informational resource to the AMA-MSS Assembly on resolutions of scientific interest and promotes medical student research by offering students the opportunity to present their research findings at a yearly poster symposium.
Community Service Committee (CSC)
The AMA-MSS Community Service Committee (CSC) is responsible for developing, implementing, and promoting community service programs at the local, state, and national levels. CSI is also responsible for the coordination of the National Service Project event at the Annual and Interim AMA-MSS meetings.
HOD Coordination Committee (HCC)
The AMA-MSS HOD Coordination Committee (HCC) is both a full time standing committee that works throughout the year and a convention committee that is active for only one AMA-MSS national meeting. HCC supports the MSS Delegate and Alternate Delegate, as well as student members of their state delegations, in forming a common and well-informed position on resolutions and reports presented to the AMA House of Delegates. HCC is also responsible for helping to write and coordinate AMA-MSS testimony for all student-authored resolutions.
Minority Issues Committee (MIC)
The AMA-MSS Minority Issues Committee (MIC) assists the AMA-MSS in addressing issues of concern to minority medical students. MIC also works to identify minority student needs and increase membership awareness and education on minority issues.
