2012 AMA-MSS Region 3 Meeting
The 2012 AMA-MSS Region 3 Meeting was held Mar. 2-3, 2012, in Oklahoma City, Okla, hosted by the AMA Medical Student Section at the University of Oklahoma. The theme was: Getting off the Bottom.

The meeting kicked off on Friday night with an inspiring and eye-opening talk by Dr. Terry Cline, Oklahoma Commissioner of Health. Dr. Cline’s talk highlighted the poor performance of states in our region in a number of health outcomes, and talked about current and future strategies for “Getting Off the Bottom.” Dr. Herman Jones, Associate Dean of Student Affairs at OUHSC, and Dr. Dewayne Andrews, Provost of OUHSC and Executive Dean of the COM, provided an official welcome on Saturday morning, followed by an energetic and motivating talk by our MSS Chair-elect LeAnne Roberts. Dr. Bob McCaffree provided unique insight into his experiences as Former Chairman of the Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust, and Dr. MaryAnne McCafree enlightened us with a talk about the AMA from the perspective of a Board of Trustees member. The keynote event and dinner banquet was held at the stunning new Peggy and Charles Stephenson Oklahoma Cancer Center. Dr. Gerard Clancy, President of OU-Tulsa, delivered an energizing talk on the social determinants of health, and challenged students to find innovative ways to address the health needs of our communities.

The weekend in Oklahoma City was not without a little friendly competition. The return of the Region 3 Cup saw students grouped into teams and challenged with the task of drafting a policy resolution in 45 minutes. A mock assembly, complete with formal parliamentary procedure, was led by Speaker of the OSMA House of Delegates Dr. Sherri Baker. Resolutions addressed topics including caregiver health, the impact of insurance regulations on patient outcomes, contraceptive coverage and employer insurance, and the role of clinical students in a world of electronic medical records. Our 2012 Region 3 Cup Champions were Charles Gill  (OUHSC), Peyton Hines  (UMC), Brandon Lennep (UMC), David Luke (Baylor COM), and Tessa Stamile (OUHSC). In line with the meeting’s theme of improving health outcomes, their resolution aimed to promote recognition of retailers who do not sell tobacco products.
