AMA Government Relations Advocacy Fellowship

The AMA Government Relations Advocacy Fellowship (GRAF) offers medical students a unique opportunity to experience firsthand the intersection of organized medicine and the federal government as it relates to advocacy and policy-making. One Fellow is selected each spring to work in Washington, D.C., as a full-time, paid member of the AMA's federal advocacy team for one year.
AMA Government Relations Internship Program

The AMA Government Relations Internship Program (GRIP) offers medical students a unique opportunity to increase their involvement and education in national health policy and in the national legislative activities of organized medicine. GRIP provides stipends to assist selected students completing summer health policy internships in the Washington, D.C., area. In addition to the duties of their internships, GRIP participants attend weekly educational seminars at the AMA's D.C. office.
AMA/Discovery Health Elective
The AMA/Discovery Health elective rotation is a four-week opportunity available exclusively to AMA medical student and resident/fellow members. The elective is offered during both the winter and summer terms. For each session, one AMA medical student and one AMA resident/fellow work to develop a medical education program that will air on the Discovery Health Channel. This exciting opportunity gives the student and resident/fellow hands-on experience in the translation of rigorous scientific data into an entertaining and informational program. A stipend of $3,000 is provided.

AMA Virtual Mentor Theme Issue Editor
Application deadline: Nov. 13, 2009
Virtual Mentor, the AMA's online ethics journal, offers medical students and residents the opportunity to serve as theme issue editors. Each theme issue editor is responsible for
- selecting a theme for one issue and defining the ethical and professionalism concerns inherent in that theme,
- generating case narratives that provide opportunities for examining those concerns in clinical and educational contexts,
- identifying, securing, and corresponding with contributors to the issue, and
- editing copy and reviewing page proofs before the issue goes live on the first working day of the month.
A stipend of $1,000 is provided.

AMA Ethics Group Internship Program
Application deadline: internships available in summer, fall, and winter/spring semesters
The AMA Ethics Group offers internships at the AMA's headquarters in Chicago on an ongoing basis. Interns provide support for ongoing projects and initiatives in the Ethics Group. Interns are asked to conduct research on a wide variety of medical ethics issues that contribute to the formation of AMA ethics policy. Interns also have the opportunity to attend faculty seminars and interact with a diverse range of professionals working in bioethics at a professional medical association.
AMA Institute for Ethics Online Fellowship in Physician Ethics and Professionalism

The AMA Institute for Ethics, together with the Medical College of Wisconsin's (MCW) Graduate Program in Bioethics, sponsors an Online Fellowship in Physician Ethics and Professionalism. This program is a unique opportunity for medical students who want to learn more about applied ethics. The online program is current, comprehensive, and convenient, with courses taught by expert faculty from the AMA, MCW, and around the world. Courses can be chosen to fit specific interests.

AMPAC Candidate Workshop

The American Medical Association Political Action Committee (AMPAC) Candidate Workshop is designed for AMA members who are considering a run for public office, and includes training on campaign strategy and media advertising, as well as hands-on sessions in public speaking and fundraising.
All costs for AMA members, except transportation to the Washington, D.C., metro area, are borne by AMPAC.
Medical student admission is limited.

The American Medical Association Political Action Committee (AMPAC) Campaign School program is intended for AMA members who wish to become involved in the political process as advocates and volunteers for medicine-friendly candidates. The School is organized around a simulated congressional campaign, where participants are put on campaign "staff" teams and attend daily lectures on campaign strategy, media advertising, and political fundraising. Each team participates in nightly exercises such as creating a campaign strategy, taping a radio commercial, and writing a political fundraising letter.
All costs for AMA members, except transportation to the Washington, D.C., metro area, are borne by AMPAC.
Medical student admission is limited.
HHMI Research Training Fellowship

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Research Training Fellowship provide funds to support fellows and meet their research- and education- related expenses. HHMI awards the fellowships through an annual competition. The fellowship provides support for one year of full-time research training in fundamental biomedical research and includes a stipend, a research allowance to meet a fellow’s research-related expenses, and a fellow’s allowance to be used for health care and education-related expenses incurred as part of the fellowship.
Fellowship research must be conducted at an academic or nonprofit research institution in the United States, excluding the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland.

NIH Clinical Research Training Program

The NIH Clinical Research Training Program for Medical and Dental Students is a 12-month program designed to attract the most creative, research-oriented medical and dental students to the intramural campus of the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland. Participants spend a year engaged in a mentored clinical or translational research project in an area that matches their personal interests and goals.

Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars Program

The Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars Program (FICRS) provides clinical research training experience for graduate-level U.S. students in the health professions. The program offers one year of clinical research training to students in medical, osteopathic, or dental school, as well as to students enrolled in doctoral-level programs in schools of public health, optometry, nursing, pharmacy, or veterinary medicine. Participants will experience mentored research training at top-ranked NIH-funded research centers in a diverse group of countries.
The CDC Experience Applied Epidemiology Fellowship

The CDC Experience Applied Epidemiology Fellowship is a one-year fellowship tailored for rising 3rd- and 4th-year medical students, designed to increase the pool of physicians with a population health perspective. Nine competitively selected fellows spend 10–12 months at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offices in Atlanta, Ga., where they carry out epidemiologic analyses in various areas of public health. Examples of previous and current areas of concentration include viral and bacterial diseases, cardiovascular health, obesity prevention, birth defects, STDs, injury prevention, and air pollution and respiratory health.
