Programming highlights
The AMA-MSS held its 31st Annual Meeting on June 11-13 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. More than 600 medical students attended the meeting, which offered more than 25 educational programs on a range of topics including health system reform, residency, student run-clinics, MD/MBA degrees, and mentoring student chapters.

The keynote address was delivered by Geoff Tabin, MD, Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Utah and the John A. Moran Eye Center in Salt Lake City and co-director of the Himalayan Cataract Project. Dr. Tabin spoke about climbing Mt. Everest and his efforts to eradicate world blindness.
The AMA-MSS hosted its 6th Annual Medical Specialty Showcase, which was a resounding success. More than 40 medical specialty societies represented in the AMA HOD provided career advice to a large number of medical students.
Governing Council elections
The AMA-MSS Assembly elected the following 2009-2010 AMA-MSS Governing Council members:
- Vice Chair - Kristina Maletz, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons
- Delegate - Kevin Blaine, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University
- Alternate Delegate - Keili Meyer, Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine
- At-Large Officer - Hayley Fischer, Brody School of Medicine of East Carolina University
- Speaker - Jennifer Paisley, University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine
- Vice Speaker - Matthew Okazaki, John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii
At the conclusion of the meeting, Hans Arora, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, commenced his term as AMA-MSS Chair and Justin Mahida, Ohio State University College of Medicine, commmenced his term as Trustee. A special thanks to Michael Chapman, Immediate Past Chair, for his outstanding service.
National Service Project
The 2009 AMA-MSS Annual Meeting marked the last National Service Project (NSP) event for “Covering the Uninsured and Protecting Access to Care.” Over 40 medical students traveled to Navy Pier to distribute information about the importance of health system reform and ensuring access to care and about the availability of safety net health services in the Chicago area. The team of students successfully engaged in conversations about health care access and reform with over 300 people over the course of the event.
The AMA-MSS also announced its new NSP focus for 2009-2011: AMA Healthier Life Steps™ Program.
Chapter of the Year
Congratulations to Thomas Jefferson University on being named AMA-MSS Chapter of the Year. The chapter will receive a $500 grant to be used toward chapter activities.
Policy highlights
The AMA-MSS Assembly considered 26 items of business, including 20 resolutions and 6 reports. Issues considered were wide-ranging and included resident work hours, refugee health, price transparency in health care, and a number internal AMA and MSS issues. Seventeen of these items were adopted, eight of which will be forwarded to the AMA House of Delegates for consideration at the 2009 Interim Meeting in Houston.
