AMA Webinar: Prepare for Lobby Day by receiving expert tips on how to communicate with Congress

Find out how you can be a leader in influencing lawmakers on various issues in medicine by taking part in “Communicating with Congress: How to be an Effective Citizen Advocate,” an AMA webinar at 8 p.m. Eastern time Feb. 7.

Free for all physicians and medical students, the hourlong call will feature AMA staff and Brad Fitch of the Congressional Management Foundation discussing research on how congressional offices process and respond to all the communications they receive, and what specifically impacts their thinking. They then will explain how you can take advantage of those tendencies to communicate clearly with lawmakers about such subjects as the need to repeal Medicare’s flawed for permanent Medicare payment reform.

You’ll learn:

  • What congressional staff believe are the most effective communication tactics for influencing members of Congress.
  • The differences between different forms of grassroots communications (email, mail, phone calls, in-person visits, etc.).
  • How to conduct effective in-person meetings, influence legislators at town hall meetings and other effective advocacy techniques that you can apply in your state and congressional district.
  • Where the AMA stands with current efforts to repeal the SGR once and for all, and how physicians and medical students can best use their relationships in Congress to amplify the repeal message.

I11 Meeting Highlights
More than 830 medical students attended the MSS Interim Meeting which was held Nov. 10-12, 2011 in New Orleans. The assembly considered more than 50 items of business and held nearly 20 educational programs on a range of topics including disaster preparedness, leadership development, writing a research paper, public health, health care reform and much more. The Summary of Actions is available for dowmload.

Medical Students Trained as EMTs
As highlighted in the AMA MedEd Update, Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine started a program in which first and second year medical students are trained as emergency medical technicians by working in ambulances.  School administrators believe that this nontraditional training program allows students to receive "hands-on" training that helps promote teamwork among prospective physicians.

What is your take on such a training model?  Does your medical school utilize any educational methods that approach training in a non-traditional manner?
