IMG Awareness Day
We are pleased to announce the IMG Awareness Day Award recipient Dr. Nyapati R. Rao. Nyapati R. Rao, MD is the immediate chair of the IMG-Governing Council of the American Medical Association, a past chair of the American Psychiatry Association's Council on Medical Education and Life Long Learning and a past president of Brooklyn Psychiatric Society. He completed his medical education in Kurnool Medical College, Andhra Pradesh, India and his residency training in psychiatry at Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. He was appointed as director of residency training in psychiatry at Brookdale hospital in 1987.
In 2000, Dr. Rao completed a Master of Science in Advanced Management Program for Clinicians from Wagner School of Public Service at New York University and subsequently moved to SUNY-Downstate as Director of Graduate Medical Education. Since 2006, he has been the chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Nassau University Medical Center -- a large, public teaching hospital in Long Island and is an Adjunct professor of psychiatry at Stony Brook School of Medicine.
In 2011, Dr. Nyapati Rao was appointed the Von Tauber Chair of Psychiatry at NUMC where he has also been the Chief Academic Officer since 2010. Under Dr. Rao's leadership, the department of psychiatry at NUMC has excelled in clinical care, education and research. Dr. Rao has held several prominent positions in organizational medicine, as well. Dr. Rao has also authored many articles as well as contributed to the IMG Section's Physician Workforce document. Despite Dr. Rao's busy work schedule, he continues to make a significant impact on the IMG community in various areas.
The IMG Awareness Day will be a recurring event every December to highlight and spread awareness about the many contributions IMGs make to American medicine. Watch for more information in the summer of 2013 regarding the deadline to receive nomination information.
