Rebecca J. Patchin, MD

Rebecca J. Patchin, MD, an anesthesiologist and pain management specialist in Loma Linda, Calif., has been a member of the American Medical Association (AMA) Board of Trustees (BOT) since 2003. She served as its secretary (2006–2007) and in June 2009 she began serving as chair for 2009–2010.
Dr. Patchin became active in organized medicine as a medical student, and has been involved in county, state and national medical associations, as well as numerous medical specialty societies, for many years. She served as president or chair of numerous committees and councils, and sat on the board of directors of both the California Medical Association (CMA) and the California Society of Anesthesiologists.
A seasoned advocate in the California legislative arena, Dr. Patchin served as chair or vice chair of the CMA Council on Legislation for seven years. In this capacity, she demonstrated unwavering leadership on behalf of organized medicine in navigating the state’s turbulent political scene.
Nationally, Dr. Patchin was selected to serve as the student trustee on the AMA-BOT in 1988. She has been a delegate to the AMA House of Delegates from the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the California Medical Association, and also served as chair of the AMA Committee on Membership during the development of the AMA’s Web-based portal, which will provide physicians access to practice-related products and services.
Dr. Patchin has a strong background in medical education. She was first elected to the AMA Council on Medical Education in 1996, was re-elected in 2000 and served as chair in 2002. As a resident physician, she served on the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and for six years was a member of the ACGME Liaison Committee on Medical Education, which she co-chaired from 2001 to 2002.
Dr. Patchin is an assistant professor of anesthesiology at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, from which she received her medical degree in 1989, and serves on the medical staffs of Loma Linda University Medical Center.
In 1989 Dr. Patchin won the Sandoz Award for Outstanding Achievement. She has also been named the Riverside County Medical Association Physician of the Year (2005) and received the CMA’s Outstanding Contribution to Organized Medicine Speakers Recognition Award (2006), the American Academy of Pain Medicine’s Presidential Commendation (2006), and the CMA Young Physicians Section’s Young at Heart Award (2008).
A native of Detroit, Dr. Patchin has spent most of her adult life in California. An active sailor, she spent many years sailing with her late husband, Carl Anderson.
