Christopher K. Kay

Christopher K. Kay

Christopher K. Kay was elected to the American Medical Association (AMA) Board of Trustees (BOT) as its public member in November 2007, and officially began serving his four-year term in June 2008. He currently sits on the AMA-BOT Audit and Finance committees, as well as on the AMA committee overseeing the development of the AMA’s Web-based resource, which will provide physicians access to practice-related products and services.

As the former chief operating officer for Toys “R” Us, Mr. Kay implemented new business strategies, technologies, processes and disciplines throughout the entire corporation, leading to significantly reduced operating costs and enhanced productivity. Mr. Kay currently serves in a consulting capacity as managing director for International Business Development at Universal Parks & Resorts. In this role, he works with government officials, financial institutions, developers and businesses on the development of integrated resorts in several different countries on behalf of NBC Universal’s theme park and resort division.

Throughout his career, Mr. Kay has been asked to speak at various symposiums, primarily concerning corporate governance, including the Duke University Directors’ Education Institute. In 2002 he was selected by President Bush to be one of seven executives to represent U.S. business interests at the first United States-Japan private sector and government meetings, held in Tokyo and Washington, D.C.

Prior to joining Toys “R” Us, Mr. Kay practiced law for 24 years, handling cases ranging from complex business litigation to corporate mergers and large real estate transactions. As a trial lawyer, he won the largest judgment in a class-action case against the state of Florida, and won several antitrust and intellectual property cases that created new legal precedents. As a business lawyer, Mr. Kay negotiated several significant development opportunities for multinational corporations doing business in Florida. He created a precedent-setting merger of local hospitals, which was subsequently reviewed and approved by the Federal Trade Commission, and also negotiated two of the largest real estate transactions in the history of Central Florida.

Mr. Kay has served as a member of the board of directors of a number of charitable organizations, including the PGA Caddie Foundation (which he co-founded along with Mark O’Meara, a professional golfer), the Toys “R” Us Children’s Fund, the Florida Citrus Sports Association and the Universal Studios Florida Foundation. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri and received his JD from the Duke University School of Law. He is a board-certified trial lawyer and a board-certified business litigator, as well as a fellow in the American Bar Foundation.

Mr. Kay is married to Kristine Kay. They have one daughter who lives in Manhattan, N.Y.
