About the Council
The AMA Council on Medical Service serves a very specific and important role within the AMA by studying and evaluating the social and economic aspects of medical care and suggesting means for the timely development of services in a changing socioeconomic environment.
Established in 1943, the council consists of 11 voting members elected by the AMA House of Delegates, including one resident, and a medical student member of the AMA and recommends policies and actions for consideration by the House. Most recently, the council developed two positioning reports on the AMA’s proposal for expanding health care coverage and choice [Expanding Health Insurance Coverage & Choice: The AMA Proposal for Reform and the basics of health savings accounts . Its work plan details specific actions to be discussed and drafted as upcoming reports before the House. The council’s reports and final actions dating to June 1998 can be found in the archived reports.
