Success Story: A Passionate Commitment to Medicine
Jaimey Pauli received an AMA Foundation Scholar Award just weeks before starting a residency in obstetrics and gynecology. Here is how Jaimey describes the experience:
“As a fourth-year medical student weeks away from graduation, receiving the AMA Foundation Scholar Award is a special honor. As I look back, I am amazed at how much I have learned and matured since I first began as a medical student. This award will allow me to continue to explore and grow as I make the leap from student to physician."
“As I entered my second year of medical school, I was introduced to a subject that would become my passion – women’s health. I began to work with an obstetrician-gynecologist on a research project in continuous oral contraception. I was fascinated by how an academic pursuit could be translated into a practical benefit for women."
“Obstetrician-gynecologists are privy to the most intimate human experiences – birth, family relationships, and end-of-life issues. They are challenged to be calm in the face of minute-to-minute change, joyful at the start of a new life, and supportive in tragedy. Like no other specialty, obstetrics and gynecology fulfills the personal desire for scientific pursuit and human interaction that initially drew me to medicine."
“I consider myself lucky to have a career that is not only intellectually but also personally stimulating. I eagerly await the next step in my training. I am honored that the AMA deems my pursuit worthy of a scholarship.”
Residents such as Jaimey Pauli are a testament to the energy and commitment that makes American physicians the best in the world. We salute Jaimey and others who distinguish themselves through hard work and dedication in medical school, residency and beyond.
