Other grant opportunities

In addition to the research opportunities listed below, we recommend checking medical specialty society websites (i.e., American Academy of Pediatrics, Radiological Society of North America). Many of them or their related foundations offer grants and training programs specific to their topic areas.

MSS/RFS Joint Research Symposium
The AMA-Medical Student Section (MSS) and Resident & Fellow Section (RFS) Joint Research Poster Symposium is held annually at the AMA Interim Meeting in November. It is designed to give students and trainees the opportunity to display their original work among peers and compete for prizes. Abstracts may be submitted in a variety of research categories, and are typically due in September. For more details, visit the AMA-MSS website or the AMA-RFS website.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute funding opportunities
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute supports biomedical research training for medical students through its Medical Student Fellowship Program and its HHMI/NIH Research Scholars Program.

Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship for Medical Students
The Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship provides medical students with a one-year fellowship experience in clinical research that includes both didactic and research components. The fellowship program solicits applications from students at any U.S. medical school, and matches students with outstanding clinical research mentors. Program information and applications are available at the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

American Lung Association Research funding opportunities
The American Lung Association offers various basic and clinical research grants and awards.

American Heart Association Research funding opportunities
The American Heart Association's National Research Program and its Affiliates offer the Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships, Clinical Research Program, Fellow-to-Faculty Transition Award, Scientist Development Grant, Beginning Grant-in-Aid, and Grant-in-Aid funding. Also offered are the Pulmonary Hypertension Association Postdoctoral Fellowship, and the AHA-PRT Outcomes Research Centers Grant Program.

Program information, forms and instructions are available on the American Heart Association website by going to the Research Awards tab.

In addition to funding research broadly related to CVD and Stroke, the National Research Program encourages applications related to obesity, women and heart disease, and resuscitation.

Visit the American Heart Association website for more information.

Emergency Medicine Foundation's Research Grants
The Emergency Medicine Foundation offers a variety of research grants in emergency medicine, including those targeted at medical students, residents and fellows.

National and Regional Student Research Forums
These forums offer medical and graduate students the opportunity to present their original research, receive meaningful feedback, and participate in scholarly discussions with peers and established scientists. Awards are given to the top-rated oral and poster presentations. The Midwest Student Biomedical Research Forum is held prior to the National Student Research Forum each year.
