Donor/Volunteer Spotlight
Craig W. Anderson, MD – Outstanding Donor and Volunteer

“After hearing the plights of the medical students both at the AMA meeting and at home in Columbus, we decided we could have a greater impact by more rapidly expanding our donations through a larger fund, such as the Ohio Honor Fund.”
Though every student’s medical school experience varies, one common sentiment seems nearly universal: distress over the staggering cost of medical education and the subsequent debt it leaves on newly graduated students. A neonatal-perinatal physician from Columbus, Ohio, took action.
Craig W. Anderson, MD, an active AMA member for 30 years, an AMA Foundation board member and recently elected member of the AMA Council on Medical Service, recognized this growing concern in his own backyard and instituted an endowed fund, the Ohio Honor Fund, which will assist medical students with school loan payments. Dr. Anderson serves as the leader and one of the founding donors of the Ohio Honor Fund, as it steadily climbs to a fundraising goal of $250,000. The Ohio Honor Fund supports the AMA Foundation’s Physicians of Tomorrow scholarship program, and after reaching the $250,000 goal, the fund will support an annual scholarship to a promising fourth-year Ohio medical student.
As an AMA Foundation major donor and volunteer, Dr. Anderson advocates on behalf of the AMA Foundation and the Ohio Honor Fund. He continues to fundraise and speak to physicians about the impact they can make through their support. On the importance of providing for future physicians, Dr. Anderson states, "Our foundation gift represents our commitment to the future of medicine...The AMA Foundation unites all physicians on a national level, showing our shared support and compassion."
We salute Dr. Anderson and his wife, Deborah, for their deep concern and commitment to relieving the financial burden and removing the obstacles that stand between a medical student and his/her goal to become a physician.
