As Program Associate, Emily is the primary point person to facilitate the scholarship and grant application process. Emily joined the AMA Foundation in May 2015 after working as a temporary employee for several months. Prior to joining the AMA, she worked in various administrative and after-school teaching positions in Chicago. Emily received her Bachelor of Arts in Theater in 2009 from Case Western Reserve University.

AMA Foundation Executive Director, Barkley Payne, has extensive experience in healthcare philanthropy given his leadership roles at several national association foundations. Previously he served as Vice President of Corporate Development and Strategic Philanthropy with the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation and Executive Director of the American Dental Association Foundation.
Barkley's professional distinctions include honorary fellowships awarded by the American College of Dentists and the International Academy of Dental Facial Esthetics, their highest awards for non-DDS professionals. Earlier in his career, Barkley was named as a young and aspiring association professional by Association Trends Magazine.
An active member of the nonprofit community, Barkley is immediate past-president of the Association Foundation Group and a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Chicago Council of Planned Giving, and the Chicago Health Executives Forum.
Director of Major and Planned Gifts
Jane is the development and planned giving director for the AMA Foundation and is responsible for developing and managing the Foundation’s major and planned gift programs. Previously, Jane directed the development strategy and management of the Foundation’s annual fund, along with donor relations and stewardship. Jane’s professional development career spans the arts and education fields, having worked as an advancement officer for the College of Architecture and the Arts at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Chicago Shakespeare Theater before joining the AMA Foundation. She recently earned a Master’s Degree in Nonprofit Administration at North Park University and has a bachelor’s degree in English and Gender and Women’s Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Hal Hothan joined the AMA Foundation as Finance Director in 2013. He is responsible for recording, analyzing, and reporting all financial information as well as managing the investment portfolio. A C.P.A., Hal started his work in non-profits at the Greater Chicago Food Depository over 20 years ago and has stayed in the non-profit world since. He worked in a variety of for-profit enterprises prior to that. His interest in accounting developed while serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Malaysia, working as a business advisor to four farmers’ cooperatives. Hal earned an M.A. in Accounting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a B.A. in Economics from Stanford University.
As the database and financial coordinator to the AMA Foundation, Bell is responsible for managing the Raisers Edge and Financial Edge Databases, keeping current constituent information on gifts, and processing accounts payable. Bell has been employed by the AMA since 1973, where she started as a key punch operator, then advanced to managing a staff of eight operators. In 2000, she started working for the AMA Foundation.
Bernadette Lim joined the AMA Foundation in April 2014. As Program Administrator, Bernadette oversees all daily activities and operations of the AMA Foundation programs, awards, and grant activities. Prior to joining the AMA Foundation, Bernadette facilitated health education outreach related to the Affordable Care Act and was involved in a variety of national public health efforts. Bernadette received a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Systems Management from Loyola University Chicago.
Originally starting with the AMA Foundation in 2008, Julie Milner has served as the Executive Assistant since January 2014. Prior to that Julie worked as the Program Associate on a part-time basis. Julie is responsible for providing support to the Foundation’s Board of Directors and assisting the Executive Director of the Foundation with development and the overall management of the Foundation including overseeing the internship program. Julie received a Bachelor of Arts in Communication in 2006 from DePaul University.
