John O'Rourke was born and raised in New York City and currently resides in St. Louis, Mo. He has been married to his wife Denise for 46 years, and they have two children and three grandchildren.
John received a master's degree from Brooklyn College in 1968. During his career John spent more than 40 years working in the health care industry. He has extensive experience in public policy, managed care administration, health insurance and government programs.
Prior to his retirement in 2005 John was the president of the Central Region for WellPoint Health Networks. He managed a group of health insurance companies that included Blue Cross of Missouri, Healthlink and Unicare. The Central Region covered multiple states and included 4,000 employees and more than 3 million plan members. He was responsible for seeing that these insurance companies functioned properly, were profitable and adhered to regulatory requirements. During his tenure with WellPoint John played a key role in establishing the Missouri Foundation for Health, which is a large philanthropic organization focused on improving the health of Missouri residents.
Prior to joining WellPoint John was the founding President of Healthlink and the Chairman of the Board of Right Choice Managed Care, a publically traded company. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the National Blue Cross Association and Chairman of their Health Policy Committee.
John worked in Washington, D.C., for more than 15 years as the Deputy Director of the Federal HMO program and as a senior policy analyst in the Office of the US Surgeon General.
John is a member of the Board of Directors and treasurer of St Luke's Hospital in St. Louis. He is also currently owner and Chairman of the Board of O&R Medical Supplies and Equipment.
