Candidate’s Statement:
I am requesting the support of the International Medical Graduate members of AMA to serve on the AMA IMG Section Governing Council. I am a present, AMA IMG Section Vice Chair. As a AMA Governing Council Member for the last 2 years, I have authored and lobbied on several resolutions related to various IMG issues. I am a co-author for the IMG Workforce Discussion and a member of the Observership Working Group. I also served as Chair of the A-09 Joint Caucus for the Sections and Special Groups: ( YPS, IMG Section, Medical Students Section, Medical School, OMSS).

Having been through the J-1 visa process, I have firsthand knowledge about it. I am Board certified in Internal Medicine, American Board of Preventive Medicine, in hyperbaric medicine and wound care; all within the last ten years and am close to the current issues in practice of medicine. I am also President of one of the largest practice groups and direct the program in several hospitals. I am on the faculty of the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and am familiar with graduate medical education issues.

At the county medical society, I serve on many committees and am a delegate to the Texas Medical Association (TMA). At TMA, I serve on the Membership Committee, Council on Health Services Organization, member of the Committee on Medicaid, Hospital Liaison Committee and the Texas Physician Advisory Board. I was also Chair of the TMA IMG Section in 2005-2006 and currently serve as a delegate to the House of Delegates. At AAPI, I am immediate past Regional Director, served as the President of the San Antonio chapter and an officer of the state organization of AAPI.

I believe I will bring my experience both at the state medical society and the national ethnic medical society to the council and will work diligently on the issues that will become increasingly complex for IMG physicians as unprecedented changes in healthcare are inevitable. I also believe the IMG physicians must be on the forefront of these discussions. I have gained valuable experience serving as a Vice Chair of IMG Section, and now I will like to lead this Governing Council and continue my efforts in advocating for IMG issues.
