2008 MSS Interim Meeting

Programming highlights

The MSS held its 30th Interim Meeting on Nov. 6-8 at the Marriott Orlando World Center. Nearly 700 medical students attended the meeting, which offered more than 25 educational programs on a range of topics including secondhand smoke prevention, disaster preparedness, research funding, and the residency application process.

MSS Research Poster Symposium
The MSS hosted the 6th Annual Research Poster Symposium in conjunction with the Resident and Fellow Section and with an educational grant from Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative. Over 70 medical student abstracts were presented, with the first place winner, Michael Bykowski, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, receiving a trip to the 2009 MSS Annual Meeting. Category winners include:

  • Cancer Biology - Anna Wolfson, Ohio State University College of Medicine
  • Cardiology/ Vascular Biology - Rashmi Rajendra, University of South Alabama College of Medicine
  • Clinical/ Epidemiological/ Health Care - LaMont Barlow, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and Marie Vasher, University of South Florida College of Medicine
  • Immunology/ Microbiology - David Hsu, Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine
  • Neurobiology/ Neuroscience - Erik Brown, Wayne State University School of Medicine
  • Radiology/ Imaging - Zeal Patel, Eastern Virginia Medical School
  • Surgery - Michael Bykowski, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine

Elections

The MSS is pleased to announce the election of the MSS Chair-elect and Student Trustee:

  • MSS Chair-elect - Hans Arora, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine
  • Student Trustee - Justin Mahida, Ohio State University School of Medicine

National Service Project

The MSS continued its National Service Project, "Covering the Uninsured and Protecting Access to Care," with another successful project. More than 75 medical students volunteered at United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Central Florida, where they provided services for children and youth with disabilities. Among the projects, volunteers painted class rooms in the UCP facility and helped to clean, beautify, and plant the garden areas of UCP nature trail area, which is used in sensory integration therapies for the children served by UCP.

Policy highlights

The MSS Assembly considered 21 resolutions and 6 reports. Issues considered were wide-ranging and included student debt, various public health issues, and internal MSS issues. Fifteen of these items were adopted, eight of which will be forwarded to the AMA House of Delegates for consideration at the 2009 AMA Annual Meeting in Chicago. Two items were referred for report.
